‘Palestinian Employment in Lebanon: Facts and Challenges’ written by the International Labour Organization (ILO), describes and analyses the situation of the 260,000 to 280,000 Palestinian refugees residing in camps and other settlements throughout Lebanon. The majority, the report explains, live under harsh living conditions: poverty rates are high, infrastructure and housing conditions are generally inadequate, and access to quality services and social protection is limited.
In addition, Palestinian refugees are subject to discriminatory laws and regulations. Among other things, the report highlights that: the Palestinian workforce is poorly educated, young, and lacking in skills; the participation of Palestinian women in the labour force is limited; low pay and long working hours are common; and higher education is correlated with improved work status and decent employment.
